Hope you enjoyed reading about our pool renovation. Since I posted that story, we evacuated our home for a week due to the local wildfires in the Santa Cruz Mountains, but are now safely home. Just one more crazy story to add to this bizarre year. Having gone through that made me even more thankful for a home to come back to, even if we are stuck here a bit more than we sometimes want. Anyway, I really should call this post part 2: the patio edition because that's what I'm going to focus on here. The good news is, as we head into Labor Day weekend many of these items are now on sale!
If you read my previous post (part 1) you saw that we renovated the entire pool and patio area at once. The pool really needed to be resurfaced and we also needed to address some drainage issues under the existing patio so we took the opportunity to tackle it all. It was a huge job and our entire yard was ripped out so we really didn't want to go through that twice. One thing lead to the next (as they often do) and we found ourselves widening the footprint of the patio to make more room for socializing, which really was the best decision. My original design called for a built-in fireplace where the BBQ is now, but after some thought, we decided a gas fire pit would be best and it allowed for more seating via a large sectional sofa.
I wanted a slightly modern/transitional look for the patio and BBQ and chose to go with smooth concrete for the patio and retaining walls, a horizontal wood plank for the BBQ, soft gray greens, white carpet roses and straw colored grasses for the landscaping and a woven rattan sectional for the seating. I went back and forth a bit on the material for the front of the BBQ, but ultimately chose a wood called ipe' which is a sustainable Brazilian hardwood which stands up to weather like teak. It can be oiled or left to weather to a gray patina. I love the warmth and texture it brings to the space.
Needless to say, our timing on this project could not have been better. This space has been used so much more than I ever could have imagined over the last few months. We even installed a little outdoor TV tucked under the eve and my husband is a happy guy watching sports out here now that they're coming back!
Okay on to the sources. We bought the outdoor sectional and fire table at Terra Outdoor Living last year during their big Labor Day sale and this is just happens to be perfect timing because they are having their Labor Day sale right now and many of their items are up to 50% off.
I hope you enjoy your last few weeks of summer. I will miss it, but I really love fall so I won't mind too much.
XO Kerry
