The holidays will be here before you know it and of course that means entertaining family and friends. It’s not too late to prepare and think about seating for your dining room. Great chairs can make the room and keep your company engaged in conversation. If your seating is in need of a refresh, I have some tips and inspiration for you. The good news is that you still have time to pick up something new in time for Thanksgiving.
Some things to consider when choosing dining chairs:
Mixing styles is perfectly okay. In fact I prefer that most of the time so your room doesn’t look too “one note”. Just make sure they share a common design element to tie them together.
Consider size and scale. How many people can you comfortably fit at your table? The rule of thumb is 24″ – 26″ of elbow room per person and you should allow about 36″ – 42″ between chairs and the wall so there is enough room for someone to walk behind the chairs while others are seated.
Materials are important too. It’s no secret I like texture in my rooms, but it can be nice to mix in some fabric for variation and comfort. If you have littles in the house, you’ll want to consider washable covers or darker materials. In my dining room, I have slip covered chairs at the head of the dining table that are easy to pop in the wash and believe me I’ve been very happy with that feature one the years.
